Measurements and Observations of IP Multicast Traffic Bruce A. Mah Computer Science Division University of California at Berkeley bmah@CS.Berkeley.EDU One of the latest developments on the Internet is the advent of Internet-wide IP multicasting services, as supported by the MBONE multicast backbone. The most frequent applications seen on the MBONE are so-called "multimedia" applications, such as the vic, nv, vat, and wb conferencing tools. These programs frequently generate network data whose characteristics are very different from traditional bulk data and interactive applications seen on the Internet, such as ftp and telnet. Understanding the network usage of these applications is important in order to control and design networks. This need is particularly compelling in light of the increasing popularity of multimedia applications. In this talk we will present measurements and observations based on traces of IP multicast traffic recorded at the University of California at Berkeley in late 1993 and early 1994.
